About Melanie Guy

“The dividing line between art, craft & design grows less distinct...

I work mostly in pewter metal, designing and extending the possibilities of this material as an art medium; procuring a purity and refinement which has taken years to mature.

My influences are from all things natural and with the Zen-like philosophy that 'less is more' I shed extraneous material to express an 'essence' by refining interpretations of my experiences and emotions. I lived on the sea for some years and the elements and the environment, its moods and contrasts, are reflected in my sensuous abstract work where light animates the undulating surfaces of the metal forms.

When passing by, light moves on the metal, here one moment and gone the next. It is ethereal and reflects the transient and delicate qualities in the balance of the natural world. As the metal is to some degree reflective, reflecting light energy, it has a quality which can be seen as a metaphor for self examination – our own image seen against that of Nature, that essence portrayed by the simple lines and forms that I secure in a design. We are natural products and yet our empathy with Nature waxes and wanes.

We have to recognise our cruel degradation of the natural world and give it space and time to recover from our mistreatment through industrial methods, pollution and over exploitation. In making a primal scream on nature's behalf, my work is replete with feeling, hoping it will rekindle awareness of the environment which suffers so by our ruthless treatment and devaluation

Working in this abstract mode, uses a universal language and is devoid of cultural reference.  I work in this personal, expressive way hoping that my work will stimulate empathy with Nature and review of her beautiful essence – the simple energy and amazing regeneration."

Her experience is extensive. She has taught for many years, up to degree level, is a co-director of a design company and has been exhibiting her own work for eleven years or more.

'Currently working in pewter, I extend the possibilities of the material into art forms. Much of my work is sculptural relief, suitable for the domestic or the corporate market. Also, I use innovative methods to colour the metal and create different products from it. Some work falls within the designer-crafts genre. I am a fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and exhibit work with them regularly.

And I design for a playground building company which specialises in sustainably sourced material, mostly wood. We make especially excitingly creative constructions for the natural play environment. Also see www.alastairguy.co.uk on my design work.'
